    Species Description - Stems up to 6 cm long, with branches 0.2-1 cm long. Leaves 0.9-1,5(—1.8) mm long, 0.4-1 mm wide, ovate, acute to short-acuminate; upper cells shortly oblong-elliptic, those at the apex often narrowly oblong, 10-22(-33) x 8-11 µm, smooth or papillose-projecting on 1 or both surfaces. Spores 18-26(-33) µm.

    Specimens from Mexico and Central America named S. julaceum Dozy & Molk. apparently belong here. Schoenobryum rubricaule (Mitt.) Man. [S. mittenii (Jaeg.) Man.], of Panama, Colombia, and Ecuador, has leaves abruptly narrowed to rather short, slender acumina, narrow apical cells with walls considerably thicker than in the upper median region, perichaetial leaves with longer awns, and spores 18-23 µm.

    On bark, often on branches, at 100-1800 m alt.; Chiapas, Hidalgo, Jalisco, Nayarit, Oaxaca, Puebla, San Luis Potosi, Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Yucatan.—Mexico; Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica; West Indies; northern South America; India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and the Netherlands East Indies.
