Species Description - Coarse epiphytes or lithophytes with ovoid-cylindric pseudobulbs to 3 X 1.5 cm positioned ± every 3 cm along stout, creeping rhizome. Leaves 2 per pseudobulb, apical, ligulate, obtuse, rigid, to 30 X 2 cm. Inflorescences panicles to 100 cm. Flowers showy, pale greenish-yellow spotted or suffused with maroon; sepals oblanceolate, acute, 15 X 5.5 mm; petals spathulate, acute, 15 X 7 mm; lip 3-lobed, 13 X 16 mm, the lateral lobes oblong-elongate, the midlobe ovate with squared base to 6 mm wide, undulate at margins, the callus central sulcate; column with paired terminal wings. Ovary not winged, fruit oblong. Fl (Aug, Oct). A second species of Encyclia at Saul, related to E. granitica, has pseudobulbs clustered without a pronounced rhizome. No flowering material of this species has been collected but the plants probably represent E. latipetala (C. Schweinfurth) Pabst.
