    Species Description - Secondary stems 5-15 cm high. Branch leaves 1.6-1.8 mm long. Setae about 2 mm high; capsules about 2.5 mm long. Spores 15 µm.

    Buck (1989) considered Alsia, Pterogonium, Bestia, and Antitrichia as a natural group, possibly best referred to its own family, the Pterogoniaceae, but he considered Dendroalsia quite unrelated to those genera. Crum (1987b) divided Bestia into two components, the type species going to the Brachytheciaceae and the other species to the Thamnobryaceae.

    On trunks of trees, occasionally also on rock; found only once in Mexico Island, Baja California.—Northwestern Mexico to British Columbia and inland to Idaho.
