Description
Species Description - Rhizomatous perennials; cataphylls absent; culm solitary, erect, 17-32 cm tall, glabrous. Leaves reduced to sheaths, often disintegrating. Inflorescences terminal, usually of 1 or 2 spikes; involucral bracts 3(4), foliaceous, 9.5-16 X 2.9-4.5 cm, sessile, 3-veined, flat in transverse section; spikes ovoid, 1.0-2.0 X 0.8-1.2 cm, obtuse to rounded; scales of spike ovate, ca. 5-5.5 X 2-2.5 mm, acute, reddish brown. Fruits achene-like, obovoid to subglobose, 2.0—2.3 X 1.3-1.5 mm, tan to olive or black, irregularly longitudinally ridged.
