    Species Description - Caespitose perennials; culms 30-50 cm tall, erect, subterete near base, flattened distally. Leaves mostly 10-20 cm X 0.9-2(3.2) mm, mostly glabrous or sparsely pubescent, particularly on sheath. Inflorescences single umbellate cymes, each usually comprising 4-6 rays surrounding a central, sessile spikelet; involucral bracts 2 or 3, the basal 2 similar to leaf blades, the distal one setose; basal bract 2.5-4 cm X 0.7- 1 mm; rays 2.5-4 cm long, terminating in a single spikelet or a secondary cyme with 2 or 3 rays to 1 cm long; spikelet 2.5-4.5 X 1.3-1.9 mm, ferrugineous to castaneous; scales ca. 1.5 X 1.5 mm, the apex rounded, the median vein greenish. Stamens (1)2; style 2-branched, flattened, fimbriate distally. Achene 0.7-1 X 0.6-0.9 mm, lenticular, broadly obovate in outline, white, longitudinally ridged with 6-9 smooth ridges, shiny to reticulate with sunken cells.
