Description
Genus Description - Annuals or perennials, usually caespitose, occasionally rhizomatous. Leaves mostly basal, mostly shorter than flowering culm, ligule absent or present as a line of pubescence. Inflorescences simple or compound umbellate corymbs of spikelets subtended by leaf-like involucral bracts; spikelets simple, ovoid, the scales spirally arranged, each (except for a few at base) subtending a flower. Flowers bisexual; perianth absent; stamens 1-3; style broadened basally and, when stigmas two, flattened and fimbriate-ciliate or, when stigmas 3, terete. Achenes lenticular or trigonous, usually obovate in outline, the apex usually rounded and apiculate, the style base deciduous, the surface pitted or rectangularly alveolate, with the pits or alveoli in vertical rows.
