    Genus Description - Annuals or perennials, usually in wet soil. Stems unbranched. Leaves reduced to bladeless sheaths surrounding bases of culms. Inflorescences solitary terminal spikelets without involucral bracts; spikelet simple, ovoid, of spirally arranged (rarely distichous) scales, each (except for basal 1-3) subtending a flower. Flowers bisexual; perianth reduced to bristles or absent; stamens 1-3; style with persistent tubercle, the stigmas 2 or 3. Achenes lenticular or trigonous.
