Description
Species Description - Plants 1-5 cm high, in dense, yellow-green to brownish tufts, red-brown to brownish below, tomentose, ± decumbent to loosely ascending and variously branched. Leaves imbricate when dry, spreading when moist, 3-4.5 mm long, narrowly ovate-lanceolate; margins revolute above or sometimes nearly to the base, singly or doubly serrate in the upper 1/2 or more; costa percurrent to long-excurrent; upper cells bistratose, quadrate to oblong, up to 25 µm long, 4-7 µm wide, smooth or with low ventral papillae at the ends; basal cells smooth, ± uniformly quadrate to rectangular from margins to costa, 7-9 µm wide, up to 20 µm long, 7-9 µm wide. Setae 5-12 mm long; capsules 2-2.8 mm long; operculum bluntly conic; peristome none or sometimes with as many as 12 deeply inserted, smooth, fragile teeth. Spores 28-32 µm.

The leaf cells are smooth or nearly so, and those of the base are uniform in size and shape (being quadrate to shortrectangular). The Mexican plants are considerably smaller than those found northward.

On soil or rocks at middle elevations; Baja California.
