Description
Genus Description - Stemless, usually epiphytic herbs. Leaves rosulate; blade predominantly strap-shaped and inconspicuously lepidote. Inflorescences various, usually of distichously flowered spikelets, rarely polystichously flowered, the floral bracts generally ample. Flowers mostly short-pedicellate, becoming secund in many species; sepals convolute, free or nearly so, symmetric or slightly asymmetric; petals free or connate into a tube much shorter than sepals, each bearing 2 ligules adaxially at base; ovary nearly or entirely superior. Seeds fusiform, with long, straight, basal coma, this whitish in Guianan species.
