  • Description

Species Description - Plants medium-sized to rather robust, in lustrous, yellow-green or more often golden to reddish brown, ± lax, sometimes extensive mats. Stems creeping, to ca. 10 cm long, usually ca. 6 cm long, red, subpinnately to irregularly branched, not or obscurely complanate-foliate; in cross-section with (2-)3-4 rows of small darkly colored thick-walled small-lumened cells surrounding larger thin- to firm-walled cells, central strand none; pseudoparaphyllia large, foliose; axillary hairs 2-celled, with a short brown basal cell and an elongate hyaline distal cell. Leaves not contorted when dry, erect to erect-spreading, oblong-lanceolate, sometimes broadly so, to ovate-lanceolate, 1-1.4 mm long, acute, sometimes cuspidate, concave, rounded to the insertion; margins not bordered, subentire to serrulate at apex, entire below except for projecting papillae, often incurved, either above or throughout, sometimes plane; costa double, strong, ending ca. 2/3-3/4 the leaf length, usually not projecting at apex; cells linear, pluripapillose, with (1-)3-6 simple or slightly branched papillae uniseriately arranged over the lumina, thick-walled, porose, becoming shorter, smooth, and colored toward the insertion; alar cells not differentiated. Asexual propagula none. Dioicous. Inflorescences and sporophytes not seen. [Welch (1976) reported setae reddish, to 3 cm long, scabrous; capsules inclined; exostome teeth with a zig-zag median line. Calyptrae mitrate, small, scabrous]

Soc., Bot. 12: 364. 1869; Neohypnella diversifolia (Mitt.) W. H. Welch & H. A. Crum, Bryologist 62: 174. 1960. Discussion. Hypnella diversifolia is characterized by glossy, often golden or red-tinged plants with oblong-lanceolate leaves. The costa is strong and the cells are pluripapillose. Although sporophytes have not been seen, Neohypnella was initially segregated for this species because the exostome teeth are not furrowed, but have only a zig-zag median line. Hypnella diversifolia is separated from H. pallescens by its larger size, stronger costa, and mostly simple papillae.
