Description
Genus Description - Mostly stemless herbs. Leaves densely polystichous. Peduncle usually conspicuous. Inflorescences mostly with two orders of branching or unbranched, the branches polystichously flowered. Flowers with sepals free to markedly connate, symmetric or asymmetric; petals not bearing ligules on claw, the claws distinct from blade and connate into tube, nearly equalling the sepals; stamens equal, more or less adnate to petal-tube. Seeds with a basal, straight, usually brown coma. Vriesea pleiosticha is included in the following key because it is easily mistaken for a species of Guzmania.
