  • Description

    Species Description - Plants small to robust (1-5, rarely 8 cm high), in loose to dense, light-green to green or yellow-green tufts, tomentose below, erect, sparsely branched. Leaves erect to loosely erect when dry, sometimes ± secund, 1.3-2.3 mm long, narrowly triangular-lanceolate, less often ovate-lanceolate; margins plane or rarely narrowly revolute, serrate nearly to the base, the teeth single; upper cells narrowly rectangular to linear, up to 50 µm long, 4-6 µm wide, distinctly papillose at the upper ends; basal cells laxer, up to 5 0 µm long and 12 µm wide, papillose at the upper ends. Dioicous. Perigonia discoid. Setae straight, 2-4 cm long; capsules inclined to cernuous, 2-2.5 mm long, furrowed; operculum conic-apiculate; exostome teeth lanceolate, granulose below, coarsely papillose above, with conspicuous transverse bars, 400-450 µm long; endostome segments nearly as long as the exostome, keeled, yellowish, distinctly papillose throughout, the cilia usually well developed, coherent at base. Spores reniform, papillose, 20-25 µm. (Sporophytes not seen in Mexican material.)

    Variable in habit, the species can be recognized by plane leaf margins with single teeth.

    On moist or wet rocks at middle to upper elevations; Baja California, Durango, Michoacan, Zacatecas.—Mexico; mainly in temperate Northern Hemisphere but also in the tropics and the mountains of Africa.
