  Genus Description - Perennial, almost always acaulescent herbs, frequently propagating by basal rhizomes. Inflorescences with peduncle usually prominent, the spikes distichously or polystichously flowered. Flowers sessile to short-pedicellate; sepals usually strongly asymmetrical; petals with ligules on claw.
