Description
Species Description - Plants of moderate size (3-5.5 cm high), in dense, light-green to yellow-brown or rufous tufts, densely tomentose below, erect, simple or sparsely branched. Leaves appressed or, less frequently, erect-spreading, often falcate, 2-3.5 mm long, not sheathing at base, lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate; margins plane or sometimes narrowly revolute above, revolute below, serrulate in the acumen, with single teeth; costa excurrent; upper cells oblong to long-rectangular, up to 5 0 µm long, 3.5 µm wide, papillose at the upper ends; basal cells laxer, quadrate to short-rectangular from the margin nearly to the costa, 8-12 µm wide, up to 40 µm long, smooth or papillose. Setae straight, flexuose, or arcuate, 15-22 mm long; capsules horizontal to pendulous, 2.8-3 mm long, ovoid, furrowed when dry; operculum plano-convex; exostome teeth inserted below the mouth, lanceolate, reddish, faintly papillose, 400-450 µm long; endostome segments nearly as long as the exostome, keeled, yellowish, bifid to below the middle, coarsely papillose. Spores reniform, papillose, 25-28 µm.

Distinctive features include appressed leaves with short, lax basal cells. The species can be mistaken for a Philonotis; in addition to other similarities, the spore ornamentation is more like that of Philonotis than most species of Breutelia.
A nomenclatural change may become necessary on comparison of the types of Bartramia erythrocaulis C. Müll., 1848, and B. jamaicensis Mitt., 1869.

Distribution
On moist to wet soil and rocks, rarely on logs, at various elevations; Chiapas, Durango, Hidalgo, Michoacan, Morelos, Nayarit, Oaxaca, Puebla, Sinaloa, Veracruz.—Mexico; Central America and the West Indies.
