  • Description

Species Description - Plants small to medium-sized, ± lustrous, matted with radicles below. Stems short, usually branched by subfloral innovations. Leaves closely spaced, ± twisted and appressed when dry, erect-spreading when moist, concave, oblong, with an abrupt, capillary tip or ± acuminate, not or indistinctly bordered by narrower cells in 1-2 rows; costa moderate in thickness, ending below the apex in lower leaves, very longexcurrent, often with a toothed hyaline tip in upper leaves; cells rhomboid-hexagonal except in the alar regions where they are subquadrate. Leaves of innovations smaller, less acuminate, narrowed at base. Dioicous. Perichaetial leaves more triangular, with a more slender costa ending below the apex. Setae slender, usually erect, up to 2 cm long, twisted to the left above; capsules erect, usually 3-4 mm long, nearly claviform to oblong-claviform with a relatively thick, short neck; operculum small, hemispheric; endostome yellowish, with a low basal membrane and rudimentary segments and cilia. Spores 22-25 µm, roughened.

This species has a wide range of variation: the plants are medium-sized to small, or rarely minute, with leaves ovate, oblong, or rarely oblong-lanceolate, capillary-pointed or only short-acuminate (in the latter case, with costa ending below the apex and without a hyaline tip) and capsules oblong to clavate.

The type of Bryum condensatum has a slightly differentiated border in the hyaline part of the leaf apex indicative of a gradation toward Brachymenium niveum. Several other synonyms can be added to the list from southern Asia and Africa.
