    Species Description - Small, single-stemmed or stemless plants of understory, the stem absent to 1.5 (rarely more) m X 1-2.5 cm, with closely spaced nodes, the internodes 0.3-1 cm long. Leaves 4-12; sheath 15-20 cm long, fibrous; petiole 40-70 cm long; blade pinnatisect, 60-100 X 30-60 cm, the rachis 25-60 cm long; pinnae subopposite, (2)3(7) per side, 30-55 X 3-10 cm, straight to slightly falcate, acuminate. Inflorescences 1 or 2 per plant, interfoliar, 1-2-branched, erect between leaf sheaths; peduncle 10-40 cm long, green, the prophyll and peduncular bract membranous, tubular, persistent, 10-30 cm long; rachis 1-12 cm long, bearing 2-15 rachillae, straight, 6-20 cm long, green at anthesis, red when bearing fruits, those of base sometimes branched. Fruits globose, shiny, 5- 7 mm diam., green, becoming black at maturity. Fl (Jun- Dec), fr (Dec-May); only in cloud forest on clay soils at elevations usually >500 m on Mont Galbao.
