Description
Species Description - Appressed epiphytic herbs. Stems to ca. 1 cm diam., dark green, weakly glossy, becoming gray, the internodes mostly 2- 5 X 1 cm; cataphylls persisting as fibers. Leaves palmate, ca. 30 cm wide; petiole about as long as blade, sharply C-shaped in transverse section; leaflets 5-9, entire, mostly short-petiolulate, 10-22 X 4-8 cm; primary lateral veins 5-10 per side, usually scarcely more prominent than interprimary veins, the collective vein 6-15 mm from margin. Inflorescences erect, the peduncle mostly <6 cm long; spathe green, lanceolate, <7 cm long, reflexed, persistent; spadix sessile, lavender to gray, narrowly conical, <10 cm long. Berries red to purplish. Fl and fr seasons unknown, but in the Amazon Basin apparently flowering and fruiting year round; widespread and moderately common in French Guiana at 120 to 720 m but seen only once at Saul between Eaux Claires and the airport.
