  • Description

    Description - Plant flowering over 1 m high. Leaves many, to more than 16 dm long; sheaths narrow and inconspicuous, densely ferruginous-lepidote; blades linear, long-attenuate, mostly less than 35 mm wide, subdensely serrate with wholly antrorse spines, green, minutely white-lepidote. Scape slender, soon glabrous, fragile at apex; scape-bracts large, subfoliaceous. Inflorescence subcylindric, 15 cm long or usually much less, apical coma small at anthesis but becoming greatly enlarged. Floral bracts broadly elliptic, acuminate, 15-20 mm long, exceeding the sepals, pungent, serrulate. Sepals broadly elliptic, obtuse, 7 mm long; petals 13-17 mm long, red or purple. Fruit slightly enlarged after anthesis, scarcely edible, readily breaking from the scape; seeds numerous.
