Description
Species Description - Plants up to about 12 mm high. Leaves imbricate, keeled, oblong-lanceolate, 1-2 mm long, exclusive of the hair points that are sometimes equally long and usually denticulate; margins recurved on 1 or both sides, 2-3-stratose near the apex; costa terete at base, with 2 ventral guide cells; cells unistratose (except at apical margins), 8-10 µm, quadrate to rounded or irregular, at the leaf middle 12-19 µm, thick-walled, and somewhat sinuose; basal cells rectangular near the costa, quadrate at the margins, only slightly thick-walled, not sinuose-walled. Autoicous. Perichaetial bracts up to 2.5 mm long. Setae erect and twisted when dry, arcuate when moist, 2-5 mm long; capsules immersed to exserted, 0.9-1 mm long, ovoid, wrinkled-plicate when dry; annulus deciduous, of about 3 layers of cells; operculum straight- or obliquerostrate; peristome teeth red, cleft above and somewhat cribose. Spores 9-12 µm, smooth or nearly so. Calyptrae mitrate.

Grimmia pulvinata grows in small, hoary cushions. The leaves are keeled, long-awned, and recurved at the margins on one or both sides. The basal cells have rather thin walls that are not or slightly sinuose. The setae are strongly curved when moist, and the ± emergent capsules are wrinkled-plicate when dry.

Distribution
Often on calcareous rock, up to about 2500 m alt.; Baja California, Chihuahua, Sonora.—Mexico; western North America, infrequent in the East; Europe; Asia; Africa; Australia and New Zealand.
