Description
Species Description - Plants up to 4.5 cm high. Leaves imbricate, rather rigid, 1-1.8 mm long, strongly keeled above, ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate, with hair points short or, in lower leaves, sometimes lacking; margins usually recurved on 1 side at midleaf, bistratose above; costa prominent at back, with 2 guide cells; cells often bistratose near the apex, 7-9 µm, quadrate or slightly longer than wide, thick-walled, ± sinuose above, longer and plainly sinuose below; basal cells 3-5:1, not sinuose. Dioicous. Perichaetial leaves u p to 2.8 mm long, with hair points short but sometimes as much as 0.4 mm long. Setae straight, up to about 2 mm long; capsules exserted, straight, 0.8-1.2 mm long, rarely more, ovoid, smooth; annulus deciduous, of 2-3 rows of large cells; operculum bluntly conic; peristome teeth entire or irregularly cleft at the tips. Spores 10-12 µm, smooth or nearly so. Calyptrae mitrate.

Distinguishing characters include the robust stature, rigidly erect, strongly keeled leaves with short hair points, and elongate, smooth-walled basal cells, not differentiated at the margins.
