    Species Description - Plants green or yellow- to olive-green above, brown to red-brown below. Stems with few branches, up to 10 (or 20) mm high. Leaves when dry appressed to loosely spreading, when moist spreading at 45-90°, somewhat concave, (1.5-)2-2.5 mm long, ovate-lanceolate to long-triangular, acute, scarcely differentiated to shortly ovate at base, not or shortly decurrent; margins recurved at base or to the leaf middle, entire, 2(-4)- stratose above and in patches in the median regions; costa percurrent to short-excurrent, covered ventrally by quadrate cells (in 5-6 rows at midleaf), with ventral stereids present or absent and no hydroids; upper cells hexagonal to subquadrate, 6-8 m wide, papillae none or occasionally weakly differentiated and 1(-2) per cell; median basal cells differentiated, rectangular to rhombic, up to 15 p m wide and 2-4:1, hyaline, thin-walled. Apparently dioicous (perigonia not seen). Setae about 10 mm long; capsules 1.5-2.3 mm long, long-ellipsoidal to long-cylindric, occasionally curved; operculum longconic to conic-rostrate, 0.5-0.7 mm long, with cells in weakly counterclockwise-oblique rows; peristome of 16 tapered teeth, erect or shghtiy twisted counterclockwise, spirally striate, low-papillose, or finely spiculose, the basal membrane low or none. Spores (7—)10—12(—15) µm, weakly papillose.

    The species differs from the similar D. vinealis var. nicholsonii (known from California) by its short-excurrent costa and long-triangular peristome teeth.

  • Distribution

    On soil and rock in wet places, occasionally submerged; Distrito Federal, Mexico, Michoacan, Morelos, Oaxaca.—Endemic.
