Description
Species Description - Plants green above, yellow- to red-brown below. Stems often branched, orange-brown, up to 15 mm long. Propagula borne serially o n branched stalks in upper leaf axils, forming brown or black masses, unicellular, globose to ellipsoidal, angled, 11—22(—35) µm. Leaves when dry erect-incurved, when moist erect-spreading, narrowly grooved at the costa, 1-2 mm long, ovate or ovate-lanceolate, rounded to obtusely acute at the apex, the base ovate to oblong; margins revolute throughout, entire; costa uniformly thick throughout, ending 1-2 cells below the apex, decurrent at base, without hydroids; upper cells subquadrate to short-rectangular, 7-10 µm wide and 1-2:1; basal cells differentiated across the leaf, rectangular, 11-15 µm wide and 3—4:1, with walls thin or evenly thickened. Dioicous. Perigonia very small and gemmiform, sessile on soil or other substrates. Setae (7-)20-25 mm long; capsules 1.5-3 mm long, cylindric; annulus revoluble, of 2-3 rows of vesiculose cells; operculum low-conic, 0.8-1.3 mm long, with cells in counterclockwise twisted rows; peristome 500-950 µm long, twisted counterclockwise 2-4 times, orange, with a low basal membrane. Spores 9-11 µm, essentially smooth.

The axillary masses of unicellular propagula distinguish this from all other species of the genus except B. calcareum, which has ligulate leaves with thick-walled marginal cells. Masses of unicellular propagula m a y also occur in leaf axils of Didymodon revolutus, which has a costa with a single stereid band and cells with papillae low, broad, solid, and simple to compound.
