Description
Genus Description - Cespitose to stoloniferous or rhizomatous annual or perennial herbs; culm erect. Leaf sheaths glabrous or hairy; ligules usually short, a line of hairs; blades flat, involute, or terete. Inflorescence an open or contracted panicle. Spikelets 1-flowered; disarticulation usually above the glumes; glumes usually 1-nerved, the lower one often nerveless, usually shorter than the spikelets; lemma 1-nerved, membranous, the apex unawned; palea subequal to the lemma; stamens 2 or 3. Fruit with a free pericarp.

Approximately 45 species in the New World and over 100 in the Old World.
