    Species Description - Annual or perennial herb, lacking stolons; flowering culms 2- 11 dm tall, decumbent at base, sparingly branched. Leaf sheaths glabrous or hairy; ligule 1-2.5 mm long; blades linear, flat, 3-40 x 0.2-1.2 cm, smooth and glabrous on upper surface. Inflorescence linear; main axis 3-12 cm long; primary branches 3.5-6 mm long. Spikelets clustered, lanceolate to ovate, 3.5-10 x 1- 2 mm; lower glume 2-9 mm long, 5-9-nerved; upper glume 1.5- 8 mm long, 1-nerved; in lower floret, lemma oblong to ovate, 5- 7-nerved, muticous, palea absent; in upper floret, lemma ovate to elliptic, chartaceous, smooth, yellow, 2.5-10 mm long, muticous.

    Distribution and Ecology - Occasional grass of dry to moist disturbed areas, waste places, and pastures. Yawzi Point Trail (W557). Also on St. Croix, St. Thomas, Tortola, and Virgin Gorda; throughout tropical South America and the West Indies.
