The tall, unbranched stems, somewhat squarrose, ciliate leaves, and evenly tapered upper lamina about the same length as the lower make this variety distinctive. The typical variety occurs only in Cuba; it has leaves straight and twisted but not crisped when dry, with upper laminae twice as long as the lower.
