Description
Species Description - Plants in compact sods, mostly less than 1 cm tall, pale-green, with conspicuous leaf bases, much branched. Leaves ca. 2 mm long, tightly crisped when dry, often folded and falcate on the shde; upper lamina ligulate, broadly rounded at the apex, 1 -several times longer than the lower lamina, usually bordered by hyahne, elongate cells, at least in some leaves, at and just above the shoulders and rarely also beyond the midleaf or completely unbordered; margins crenate-dentate because of projecting cells but otherwise undifferentiated, not thickened; upper cells ± quadrate, obscure, pluripapillose; lower lamina not or only shghtiy broader than the upper, entire or slightly toothed; costa smooth. Propagula borne along the costa toward the apex. Setae yellowish-red, 3-4 mm long capsules ovoid-cylindric, ca. 1 mm long; Operculum ca. 1 mm long; peristome teeth fragile, irregular, blunt. Spores 17-19 µm, granular. Calyptrae 2 mm long, rough above.

The tightly crisped, short, lingulate leaves with the apex up to 1200 m alt.)-, bluntly rounded and sometimes retuse and the absence of a well-defined border of hyaline cells on the upper lamina make S. ligulatus easy to recognize.

Distribution
On bark or rotting wood, rarely rock, at low elevations (up to 1200 m alt.); Jalisco, Nayarit, Tamaulipas.—Mexico to northern South America; West Indies; Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
