    Genus Description - Epiphytic or terrestrial stemless or shortly stemmed herbs, frequently propagating by basal rhizomes. Leaves rosulate, linear, chartaceous to coriaceous, with spiny margins. Flowers bisexual, congested or scattered in simple or compound spikes or racemes on elongate scapes; sepals free or connate, usually strongly asymmetric, continuous into a hypanthium; petals free, usually bearing 2 basal appendages; stamens shorter than the petals, the filaments free or the second series adnate to the petals, the anthers dorsifixed; ovary inferior, with several ovules. Fruit a berry; seeds naked, several, small, dark.
