Description
Genus Description - Herbs or large branching trees. Leaves spirally arranged, rosulate, rarely 2-ranked; blades thick and succulent with bitter sap, margins spiny or serrate, the apex spine-tipped. Inflorescence an elongate raceme or panicle with many nodding flowers, the scape naked toward base. Perianth segments fused into a tube with spreading or recurved lobes, red, red and green, orange, or yellow; ovary ovoid to oblong-ovoid, sessile, 3-angled with numerous ovules in each locule. Capsule coriaceous; seeds many, flattened, black.

Distribution
Approximately 330 species in Africa and Madagascar, with the center of distribution in South Africa. Cultivated and becoming widespread in subtropical and tropical regions of the New World.
