Description
Species Description - Perennial herb with bulbous base; bulb ovoid to subglobose, 4.5_7 x 4.2-9 cm, the neck short; roots stout, coarse, 2-3 mm wide. Leaf blades 23-60(-90) x (2.8-)4-9 cm, linear to linearoblong, finely veined, septate, acute at apex, the margins smooth. Scapes 25-60 cm long, glabrous, green; spathelike bracts ovate to ovate-lanceolate, membranous, 4-6 x 1.8-3 cm. Flowers 8- 20, fragrant, subsessile or short-petiolate; perianth segments linear, 7.5-12 x 0.2-0.5 cm, white, the tube 4-9 cm long; staminal cup funnel-shaped, 2-2.8 cm long; anthers 0.9-1.9 cm long, greenish, the filaments 5.7-9.5 cm long; ovary 8-20 mm long; style 14-20 cm long. Fruit ovate to oblong-ovate or subglobose, 2-2.5 cm long, 1-1.5 cm wide.
Distribution and Ecology - Occasional in disturbed areas and along roadsides. Bordeaux (A5130). Also on St. Croix and St. Thomas; Hispaniola, Puerto Rico (including Culebra), Jamaica, and the Lesser Antilles.
