Description
Genus Description - Vines; stems often fleshy, with leaf-opposed tendrils. Leaves simple or 3-foliolate, petiolate, entire or toothed at margins; stipules deciduous. Flowers 4-merous, usually bisexual, actinomorphic, in umbelliform clusters in compound cymes opposite to a leaf; calyx bell-shaped, 4-toothed; corolla of distinct petals that spread or reflex at anthesis; stamens alternating with the petals; nectary disk cupshaped, entire or 4-lobed; ovary 2-locular, the style elongate, stout. Berry globose, ovoid, or depressed-globose, juicy, blue to black at maturity.

A pantropical genus of about 350 species.
