Description
Genus Description - Shrubs or trees; branches usually 4-angled. Leaves opposite or verticillate, petiolate, with entire to serrate margins, usually with pair of glands at base or on petiole. Rowers bisexual, pedicellate, in axillary or terminal racemes; calyx tubular, truncate or 5-lobed; corolla 5(-6)-merous, funnel- or trumpet-shaped, the lobes spreading; stamens 4(-5), the filaments in 2 pairs of unequal length, inserted on the upper half of the tube, the fifth stamen usually reduced to a staminode; ovary 4-locular (sometimes imperfectly so), each locule with a single ovule, the style slender, the stigma bifid. Fruit drupaceous, fleshy, with 2 pyrenes, each containing 2 seeds; fruiting calyx cupular and hardened.
