    Species Description - Small tree 5-10 m tall; bark brown with light brown, rounded lenticels; twigs pubescent or puberulent, nearly cylindrical. Leaf blades 4-13 x 2.5-7.5 cm, ovate-lanceolate, chartaceous, puberulent, with 2 ascending basal secondary veins, the lower surface minutely punctate, the apex acuminate, the base rounded-cordiform, very unequal, the margins serrate; petioles 5-10 mm long; stipules early minute, deciduous. Flowers unisexual, the staminate flowers in short axillary cymes, the pistillate flowers usually solitary. Calyx deeply parted, ca. 1.5 mm long, the sepals oblong, concave, with ciliate margins; anthers nearly sessile, as long as the sepals. Drupe ellipsoid to nearly globose, 7-8 mm long, turning from green to purple-black, with 2 persistent styles.
