Description
Species Description - Erect herb 30-80 cm tall, single-stemmed with pseudodichotomous branching or many-branched from base; branches herbaceous to fleshy, 4-angled, covered with soft, glandular hairs, the internodes slightly swollen, the pith usually hollow. Leaf blades 2.7-7 x 2-6 cm, ovate, chartaceous, sparsely pubescent, especially along veins, the apex acute to acuminate, the base rounded, truncate, or subcordate, slightly unequal, the margins remotely serrate, the teeth acute. Flowers reflexed; peduncle stout, 5-15 mm long, pubescent. Calyx green, bell-shaped, 4-5 mm long, pubescent, the sepals lanceolate; corolla broadly funnel-shaped, ca. 7 mm long, light yellow, the limb 5-angled, with round sinuses between angles; stamens slightly exserted, the anthers whitish; style club-shaped, the stigma greenish, nearly capitate. Fruiting calyx with ovoid outline, 2-2.7 cm long, 5-angled, green, pubescent; berry globose 1-1.2 cm long. Seeds numerous, orangebrown, lenticular, ca. 1.5 mm long.

An occasional roadside weed of moist areas. Road to Bordeaux (A2851, A3136). Widespread throughout tropical America.
