    Genus Description - Shrubs or trees. Leaves trifoliolate or unifoliolate, with elongate petioles; stipules wanting. Flowers zygomorphic, 4-merous, functionally pistillate or staminate (plants apparently dioecious), produced in axillary racemes, panicles, or thyrses; calyx of 2 pairs of unequal sepals; petals usually white and spatulate, with a pair of marginal appendages; nectary disk unilateral, semiannular or 4-lobed; stamens 8, the filaments unequal, connate at base into a short tube, the anthers dorsifixed; ovary 2-carpellate, each carpel with a single ovule, the style terminal, with 2 stigmatic branches. Fruit a fleshy or leathery berry, of 2 monocarps, one of which is usually abortive; seeds 1 per monocarp, usually subglobose.
