    Species Description - Shrub or small tree 1-3 m tall; stems cylindric, glabrous, slightly swollen at nodes. Leaf blades 2-5.5 x 1.5-4.8 cm, ovate to widely ovate, coriaceous, glabrous, the tertiary venation inconspicuous, slightly prominent, very finely reticulate, with rounded to square loops, 0.2-0.4 mm wide, the apex obtuse, the base cordate, the margins entire; petioles 3-5 mm long, nearly cylindrical, reddish-tinged; ocrea 3.5-5 mm long, glabrous, membranous, early deciduous. Flowers greenish, solitary or paired at ocreate, widely spaced nodes along terminal racemes; axes 1.5-5(-7) cm long, glabrous; pedicels ca. 1 mm long or shorter, covered by the ocreate base and 2 bracteoles. Perianth ca. 2 mm long, the hypanthium cup-shaped, ca. 1 mm long, crowned by 5 spreading lobes; stamens yellowish. Achene ovoid to ellipsoid, 4-5 mm long, surrounded by a reddish hypanthium with imbricate, short tepal lobes at apex.
