Description
Species Description - Terrestrial or rarely epiphytic herb, erect or decumbent, to 50 cm long; stems succulent, glabrous, brownish, rooting at lower nodes. Leaves alternate; blades 4-15 x 2-8 cm, obovate or obovate-elliptic, succulent, glabrous, the apex rounded or obtuse, often slightly emarginate, the base cuneate or abruptly attenuate onto the petiole, the margins slightly wavy; petioles 1-5 cm long, nearly winged or ridged. Flowers in simple or branched terminal spikes, densely flowered; pistil borne in a depression on the rachis. Drupe ellipsoid, 0.7-1.2 mm long, the beak straight, one-fourth to one-half the length of the fruit.
Distribution and Ecology - Common herb in forest understory, found on humus layer. Bordeaux Mountain (A618). Also on St. Croix, St. Thomas, and Tortola; Mexico, Central America, the West Indies, and South America.
