Description
Genus Description - Climbing or erect shrubs or twining lianas. Leaves opposite or less often alternate, simple or pinnately compound. Flowers bisexual, often fragrant and showy, solitary, clustered, or in terminal or axillary cymes or panicles; calyx bell-shaped or funnelform, 4-9-lobed or toothed; corolla salverform, 4-9-lobed, the lobes slightly imbricate, the tube cylindrical; stamens 2, included in the corolla tube, the filaments short and adnate to it, the anthers 2-lobed; ovary with a long and slender style, the stigma usually 2-lobed or rarely simple. Fruit a small berry.
Distribution and Ecology - A genus of about 450 species native to eastern and southern Asia, Malaysia, Africa, and Australia, many of which are now naturalized in the neotropics.
