Description
Genus Description - Shrubs or trees. Leaves opposite, simple, entire. Flowers bisexual, in axillary or rarely terminal panicles, racemes, or fascicles; calyx small, 4(-5)-parted or -toothed; corolla of 4 free or nearly free, narrow, elongate petals; stamens 2(-4), the filaments short, free or adnate to the base of the corolla, the anthers lineate or ovate; ovary 2-locular, the locules with 2 ovules each, the style short, the stigma 2-lobed. Fruit an ovoid, oblong, or subglobose drupe.

Distribution
A genus of about 120 species with pantropical distribution, best developed in Southeast Asia and southeastern North America, with a few species extending into the warm-temperate zone.
