Description
Genus Description - Dioecious shrubs or trees. Leaves opposite, verticillate or rarely alternate. Flowers unisexual, usually with abortive organs sex, small, in axillary or terminal cymes; bracts and bracteoles minute; staminate perianth urceolate, globose, or elongate, 4-5- toothed; stamens 5-10, included, the filaments unequal, inserted at the base of the perianth; pistillode reduced; pistillate perianth urceolate or tubular, 4-5 toothed, sterile stamens inserted at base of ovary; style included, the stigma many-branched. Anthocarp fleshy without glands, the endocarp hard, striate.
Distribution and Ecology - About 70 species, from tropical America.
