    Genus Description - Trees or shrubs, glabrous or pubescent, usually with simple hairs. Leaves opposite, with translucent oil glands. Flowers small to large, produced in axillary racemes, sometimes fascicle-like on shortened axes or cauliflorous; bracts and bracteoles usually persistent; hypanthium not prolonged beyond the ovary; petals 4, white, spreading at anthesis; stamens numerous, the filaments free, the anthers opening by longitudinal slits; ovary usually 2-locular, the locules with numerous ovules, the style filiform, the stigma punctiform or rarely peltate. Fruit a l(-2)-seeded berry, crowned by the sepals.

    Distribution and Ecology - About 550 species, of which 500 are from tropical and subtropical America; the remaining species are from the Old World tropics.
