    Genus Description - Shrubs or small trees, variously pubescent but usually with dendritic or lepidote hairs. Leaves of a pair unequal, entire or toothed, 3-5-veined, petiolate. Rowers, medium-sized, 4-5-merous, pedicellate, in terminal panicles or corymbs; calyx constricted just below the apex, urn- or bell-shaped, the sepals minute; petals white, obovate; stamens 8-10, isomorphic, the anthers opening by a terminal pore; ovary 4-5-locular. Fruit a small berry with numerous seeds.

    A genus of about 25 species, in the West Indies, except for 1 species in Florida.
