  • Description

    Species Description - Plants u p to 4 cm high. Leaves 5-7 mm long, remotely denticulate at the apex; upper cells 6-8 µm. Setae commonly in clusters of 2-4, rarely 7, variable in length even on the same plants, (3-)10-15(-25) mm long, yellow; capsules 2-3.5(-4) mm long, slenderly cylindric, yellow-brown except at a red mouth; annulus none; operculum 0.7-1 mm long. Spores 15-17 µm, finely papillose.

    Though long overlooked, the synonymy of S. helicophylla of the New World with the slightly older Didymodon vaginata Hook, of Asia seems well established (Salmon, 1898).

    On logs (often charred), less commonly on bark at base of trees, rock, and soil in coniferous forests at 2200-3100, rarely 3800 m alt.; Chihuahua, Distrito Federal, Durango, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Jalisco, Mexico, Michoacan, Morelos, Oaxaca, Puebla, Veracruz.—Mexico; Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Panama; Arizona and New Mexico; China and the Himalayas.
