  Genus Description - Plants small to medium-sized, in dull, green, yellow-green, or yellow-brown, moderately radiculose tufts. Stems often forked. Leaves erect-incurved and usually contorted when dry, keeled, oblong-lanceolate or oblong-ligulate, broadly pointed (often rounded or rounded-obtuse); margins denticulate, serrate or crenulate above, usually recurved below; costa ending somewhat below the apex, with 1 stereid band; upper cells rounded-quadrate to short-rectangular, thin- or thick-walled, smooth, mammillose, or conic-papillose; lower cells rectangular, pale, smooth, not differentiated at basal angles. Monoicous. Perichaetial leaves scarcely differentiated. Setae single, elongate, erect or flexuose; capsules exserted, erect and symmetric or ± curved and inclined, ovoid to oblong-cylindric, smooth; annulus persistent; operculum rostrate; peristome teeth inserted below the mouth, lanceolate, undivided, faintly and irregularly striolate or nearly smooth. Spores spherical. Calyptrae cucullate, smooth, entire.
