Description
Species Description - Plants in silky, yellow-green, compact tufts 1—2(—5) cm high, densely red-brown radiculose below. Leaves nearly appressed when dry, 4-5 mm long, gradually narrowed from an ovate base to a slender, channeled point, subentire or sparsely toothed at the extreme apex; costa about 2/3 of the leaf base, excurrent, smooth at back, without stereids; alar cells slightly differentiated, hyaline and not inflated or sometimes forming small, distinct, red-brown auricles; basal cells laxly rectangular, thin-walled, about 6 rows at the margins narrow and elongate as a distinct border extending well up the leaf; upper cells rectangular, 3—4:1 (20-24 x 5-7 µm). Setae 5 mm long, erect, pale; capsules ovoid, pale, ribbed; operculum long-rostrate. Spores 21-24 µm, brownish, finely papillose.

The costa is smooth at back and lacks stereids. The alar cells are only slightly differentiated, though sometimes colored in small auricles. The basal cells are laxly rectangular, with those toward the margins being much narrower.

Distribution
Rare, on rocks at high altitudes; Nayarit and Oaxaca.—Mexico; rare and scattered in northern and montane parts of North America; Newfoundland; Greenland; Europe; China.
