    Species Description - Tree to 15 m tall; bark dark gray to brown, lenticellate, aromatic, peeling off in irregular plates; branches nearly cylindrical, ferruginous tomentose, lenticellate or smooth. Leaf blades aromatic, 5-14 x 1-3.7 cm, lanceolate, elliptic-lanceolate or elliptic when young, coriaceous, reticulate-veined, ferruginouspubescent, but becoming glabrous with age, the apex obtuse to acuminate, the base obtuse, sometimes slightly unequal, the margins entire; petioles 6-10 mm long. Rowers ferruginous-tomentose, in short axillary racemes; hypanthium 1.5-1.7 mm long, tepals ovate, 0.5-0.7 mm long; stamens 3, the anthers 2-celled, each opening by an uplifted valve. Fruit cupule nearly woody, 5- 7 mm wide, obconical, double-rimmed at apex, the fruit ellipsoid, glabrous, 10-15 mm long.

    Distribution and Ecology - Occasional in moist forests. Bordeaux Mountain (A4696). Also on St. Croix, St. Thomas, and Tortola; probably in Hispaniola (fide Lamarck, 1792), Puerto Rico (including Vieques), and the Lesser Antilles.
