Description
Species Description - Plants in loose, yellow-green tufts, slightly radiculose at base, appressed-foliate except for a comal tuft of long, erectspreading leaves. Leaves 6-7 mm long, the stem leaves gradually lance-subulate, the outer comal leaves ending in along, narrow awn, and the perichaetial leaves abmptly narrowed from a broad base to a long, slender subula; costa 1/3 of the base, smooth at back, excurrent as a serrate awn, in section showing ventral leucocysts and dorsal groups of stereids; alar cells orange or reddish, not forming distinct auricles; basal cells of stem leaves ± thick-walled, short-rectangular (1-2:1), those of the comal leaves thin-wailed, longer (3-4:1 and about 38-45 x 15-18 µm), those at the margins smaller and narrower; upper cells irregularly subquadrate to short-rectangular, about 10-15 x 8-10 µm, vanishing near midleaf. Setae about 4 mm long, pale; capsules 1-1.5 mm long, inchned, not stmmose, ovoid, hght-brown. Calyptrae not fringed.

This species is easily distinguished by its conspicuously tufted comal leaves, short basal cells (except in comal leaves), and obliquely inclined capsules. It is, however, closely related to C. pauper and might better be placed as a variety of that species.

Distribution
Very rare, on soil and decaying logs at 1500-3000 m alt.; Chiapas, Puebla, Veracruz.—Mexico; Costa Rica; Venezuela, and Colombia.
