Description
Species Description - Plants in loose, yellow-green tufts up to 5 cm high, densely whitish or reddish-tomentose, ± equally fohate. Leaves erectspreading, the upper part curled, 6-7 mm long, long-lanceolate, subulate, ending in a roughly dentate awn; costa 1/2 or more of the base, in section showing large ventral leucocysts (occupying 1/2 of the section), with a layer of smaller leucocysts below them, groups of 4—7 very small stereids except at the margins, and a dorsal layer of shghtiy protruding cells; alar cells hyaline or reddish and thin-walled in auricles, extending to the costa and intruding on it; basal cells hyaline, thin-walled, rectangular, those at the margins narrower; upper cells short-rectangular and ± opaque, 4-5 x 5-7 µm. Sporophytes not seen.

This species is distinguished from C. flexuosus by thinwalled, hyaline basal cells and alar groups occupying part of the costa, as well as the long, spine-like, serrate awn and structure of the costa (which has large, ventral leucocysts and narrow stereids vanishing toward the margins).

On tree trunks and decaying wood above 2000 m alt.; Chiapas, Jalisco, Puebla, Tamaulipas, Veracruz.—Mexico; Guatemala; Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru, Argentina, and Brazil.
