    Genus Description - Herbs or subshrubs. Leaves opposite, usually serrate. Flowers bisexual, produced in heads, spikes, or panicles; calyx tubular or bell-shaped, regular, usually enlarging in fruit, the lobes 5, equal or nearly so; corolla purple or white, bilabiate, the upper lip 2-lobed, the lower lip 3-lobed, with middle lobe pouchlike; stamens 4, declined onto lower lip; ovary on enlarged base, the style elongate. Fruit of 2 or 4, 1-seeded, ovoid, cylindrical or flattened nutlets.
