Description
Genus Description - Trees scandent shrubs, or lianas. Leaves imparipinnate or unifoliolate; leaflets alternate; stipules minute, deciduous. Flowers small, in short axillary or terminal racemes or panicles, the bracts and bracteoles minute, deciduous or persistent; calyx bell-shaped, with 5 short to elongate, unequal sepals; corolla white, yellow, or pink, the standard rounded to ovate, notched at apex, narrowed at base, the wings usually longer than the keel; stamens 9 or 10, all fused or one of them free; ovary stipitate, pubescent, with few ovules, the style usually curved, the stigma minute. Legume flattened, linear to rounded, usually with membranous margins, indehiscent; seeds small, lenticular.
Distribution and Ecology - A primarily tropical genus with about 100 species.
