    Genus Description - Understory, canopy, or emergent trees, buttressed or unbuttressed. Bark usually at least slightly fissured. Leaves deciduous or not deciduous; venation mostly brochidodromous, less frequently eucamptrodromous, the tertiary veins reticulate. Buds globose. Flowers usually diurnal, infrequently nocturnal, zygomorphic; calyx with 6 lobes; petals 6, the apices rounded; androecium flat or with inwardly swept appendages, not forming a complete coil, the anthers of staminal ring <2 mm long, with lateral dehiscence; ovary 4-locular, the ovules inserted along or toward base of septum. Fruits globose. Seeds usually with basal aril or aril absent (e.g., L. prancei); embryo without cotyledons.
